Several wet loose avalanches occurred this afternoon in the region. These were on solar aspects and triggered by people as well as the sun coming out and warming the snowpack later in the day. One glide avalanche was seen on Penguin Ridge facing the Forest Service Ranger Station.  [ Read More ]

Toured up to Taylor pass and then up the ridge to Sunburst. At low elevations there was about 6-12″ of wet snow on the surface. Above 2500′ the snow surface only had a thin crust with dry snowpack below that. We found the buried surface hoar about 2.5′ deep but did not get concerning results  [ Read More ]

Quick tour up to treeline on Tincan to see how things have changed over the past week. Snowpack was wet and unsupportable up to around 1500′, with a just barely supportable melt/freeze layer above that. I dug a quick pit at 2300′ on a north aspect and did not see anything concerning in the pit.  [ Read More ]

We skinned to 2000′ to see how wet the snowpack was from 3 days of above freezing temperatures and rain. At this elevation there was less than an 1″ of new snow over wet snow that will likely freeze into a crust. Below 1400′ our boots sunk around 10″ deep into wet snow. Above 1400′  [ Read More ]
