Deep trail breaking in a couple feet of new snow up the glacier to the saddle below Explorer Peak overlooking the Placer/Skookum Valley. Natural avalanches in Skookum Valley on all aspects. Deep snow 2-4ft penetration with snowmachine. Also heard one whoopf while digging out sled on a southwest facing slope on Skookum Glacier. Some avalanches were clearly newer, as they crossed over snowmachine tracks. Slight crust and denser snow at low elevations, dissappears over 700 ft.  [ Read More ]

Along our route up explorer glacier we noted widespread surface hoar on the snow surface from where we started our tour to where we stopped, approx 3000ft. 10-12 inches of dry surface snow from valley bottom to the top of the glacier. Underneath the new snow was a slick bed surface. Steep terrain on all aspects was riddled with wide-propagating crowns where storm slabs failed likely during or shortly after the last storm. Up Skookum Valley to upper glacier, ~3200’. Several storm slabs seen on all aspects and elevations. All appeared to be running on 3/5 interface, nothing deeper. Wet loose on Solar aspects and definitely started to feel a sun crust on steeper southerlies after 4p.  [ Read More ]
