Peak 3 – New Weather Station (Chugach State Park)

NEW – Ridgetop weather information for the Peak 3 area of Anchorage’s Front Range!

Access station on weather tab menu ‘Peak 3’. Direct link HERE.

We are excited to share that we installed a new weather station near the summit of Peak 3 in Chugach State Park. This station will provide critical data on wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and relative humidity from a very high use part of Anchorage’s Front Range. Remote weather stations help inform our Chugach State Park avalanche outlook and give Front Range skiers and riders a clearer picture of weather conditions before they head out the door. We made every effort to place this station out of the way of existing trails and high use areas while still capturing high quality weather data. Here are some FAQs about the station:

  • Is it a year-round weather station?
    • Yes, this will live on top of Peak 3 to provide weather information winter and summer.
  • Is the station permitted?
    • Yes, the Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center worked closely with Chugach State Park to select this site and get necessary approvals for a year-round weather station installation.
  • Who paid for the weather station?
    • The Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center paid for the station through a generous grant from ConocoPhillips.
  • Who does it benefit?
    • This station gives high quality wind data to all users of Chugach State Park. It is especially useful for backcountry skiers, climbers, hikers, and paragliders who closely monitor wind conditions.
  • Who installed and maintains the station?
    • The Friends of the Chugach AvalancheĀ Center are responsible for maintenance and making sure the data is available to the public.
  • Where can I access the data?
  • Why are there cameras on the station?
    • The cameras capture hourly images of sky cover and snow cover conditions which are invaluable for planning trips to the Front Range and assessing weather/avalanche conditions. One is aimed east towards Powerline Pass to the Ramp and the other is aimed south towards McHugh Peak.
