Route & General Observations

Went up to the pass to install the ‘Are you beeping?’ sign near the Tincan trailhead and do some early season rescue practice. We spoke with several groups coming down from both Seattle Ridge and Tincan to get some information on current conditions.

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.
Weather

Some high clouds but mostly clear with unseasonably warm temps.

Snow surface

Large surface hoar on top of a fairly stout melt freeze crust at the road elevation. A group we spoke with said that the conditions on the sunnyside of Seattle Ridge along the motorized uptrack were wet and it was easy to punch though to the ground with a ski pole on solar aspects up to 2000'. We saw some roller balls and loose wet avalanches on steep south facing slopes on Seattle Ridge which align with their observations.

Folks we talked to who were coming down from Tincan said the breakable crust went away somewhere around treeline and the surface conditions improved in the alpine.
