This cornice failed after several minutes of moving around on the ridge and
ultimately took out about 6′ of older snowmachine tracks.
This proves a great reminder of how “loose” cornices are becoming in our region,
particularly late in the day. Cornices deserve a wide berth when traveling
above or below and as this photo shows, can often break much further back on a
ridge than anticipated.
