Avalanche Details

Two natural avalanches were observed in the Snake Pit on Tincan in adjacent gullies. Evidence of propagation down the gully walls.

Observer Comments

Whumpfing/collapsing observed near treeline. Most significant one was felt after stepping out of one ski and penetrating into facets with boot.

Weather

Snowing, heavy at times 2+ inches fell during 4 hrs in the field.
Winds were easterly 20 mph and gusting into the 40s. Definitely moving snow around.
Temperatures: 32F at parking lot, 20s at Treeline

Snow surface

Soft new snow 16-20"
Stiffer where wind effected, scoured in spots
Heavier below 1500'

Snowpack

16-20" of new on surface hoar and/or facets. Hand pits were failing on isolation in wind effected spots and compression tests failed at 4-6 taps. Bottomless conditions below treeline sinking into faceted snow.
