Avalanche: Turnagain
Location: Tincan Common Bowl
Standard route up tincan after the most recent storm cycle to see what sowpack was like.
Avalanche Details
Skier triggered avalanche on the Kitchen Wall at top of Common Bowl. Skiers had been making runs down the shallower aspects to the left and right earlier with no problem. Appears slope went due to moving to the steeper aspect and possibly things warming up as the day went on. Looks like the slide was the new snow that went on a bed surface of windslab/sun crust.
Skier was caught but managed to get to the edge of the slide and barely buried.
Weather
cloudy with intermittent snow showers. winds were about 5 - 10
Snow surface
1000' 8" very moist new snow
1800' 14" moist powder
2500' 8" - 12" of dense powder that had been wind affected.
Snowpack
Just a few hand pits that didn't show an shears. New snow was too unconsolidated to act as a slab but appeared to be bonded to older snow at least on the aspects looked at.
