Avalanche Details

A party of four snowboarders riding down the corniced ridge (CFR ridge) from the top of Common Bowl triggered two very large avalanches remotely, from the ridge. One avalanche was on the North side and one on the Southwest. The North avalanche took out some of the Tincan Chutes and extended West of the chutes for several hundred feet. We do not have photos of the North avalanche, only one with some of the crown showing. The avalanche on the Southwest side was in CFR bowl and where the photos are taken.

No one was caught in the avalanches that we know of and all cars in the Tincan parking lot were accounted for at the end of the day.

There were several parties in the area that we have spoken with and have sent in photos. Although none of these parties witnessed the slides occur (except for the group who triggered the avalanches, whom we were not able to speak with) they were on scene shorty after. Two separate parties performed beacon searches in the debris on the Southwest avalanche and could not find a signal. No beacon search was initiated on the North debris and no known people were thought to have been in that area at that time. One party skied the North side 1.5 hrs earlier and the slide took out their tracks and the area they stopped to put their skins on.

Many thanks to the folks who called in and emailed with their account of the events from the day and their photos. We are, of course, very relieved that no one was caught in these avalanches. There was another large avalanche on the North side of Magnum that took out the skin track up to Taylor Pass. No one is believed to be caught in this slide either.
