Observation: Turnagain

Location: Sunburst skin track @ brushline.

Route & General Observations

Common Sunburst uptrack. Stopped to dig pits and look at the fresh snow on the last rolling hill before gaining the ridge. Pit location was 2000′, SW aspect, slope angle ~28 degrees.

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.

Temp: -9.5C. Wind: Calm. Precip: S1. Sky: Overcast-Obscured.

Snow surface

~30cm of fresh snow. Light powder.

CT17Q3 on new snow/crust interface.
ECTN24Q3+ on new snow/crust interface. Poor slab characteristics, decent bonding @ interface.

We expected to find buried surface hoar as the weak layer, but instead it was a 1~2cm thick crust (perhaps from last week's inversions and warm temps in alpine?). In the pit we dug, the new snow was well bonded with the crust layer, and generally unreactive.
