Both lanes of the Seward Highway near Summit Lake Lodge near milepost 44 were
buried by avalanche debris 3-4′ deep X 80′ wide during avalanche hazard
reduction work on 12/12/11. This avalanche was an artificial trigger with
artillery shot by an AK DOT crew. The Seward Highway was closed at the time of
this avalanche for the purpose of avalanche hazard reduction work and it took
AK DOT crews about 15 minutes to clear the debris from the road before
reopening to traffic.
