Route & General Observations

Observations from my views today around the summit lake area.
A bit of a “head scratcher” kind of day to figure out previous wind loading patterns to avoid stiffened slabs that we know sits on top of near surface facets and buried surface hoar.

Red Flags
Red flags are simple visual clues that are a sign of potential avalanche danger. Please record any sign of red flags below.
Obvious signs of instability
Recent Avalanches?No
Collapsing (Whumphing)?Yes
Cracking (Shooting cracks)?Yes
Observer Comments

One whumph and shooting cracks during the day when I traveled across a few wind pillows on a low angle alpine ridge line. Upside down on pillows with ski pole probe. Non wind loaded/wind stiffened upper snowpack felt right side up with pole probes (besides the buried surface hoar out there but you can't feel that).

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.
Weather

Overcast at 8:30am, broken clouds by 9:30 then valley fog rolled in up to about 2,000' for the rest of the day.
Temps in the mid to high teens.
Light S-SSW winds in alpine on ridge line.

Snow surface

15-25cm ski pen.
Alpine has wind affect from previous winds which seemed to have a variety of wind patterns from NE and S to W and NW.

Snowpack

No pits dug, travel today was all about avoiding stiffened slab character that is over NSF and BSH.
