D1.5 to D2 sized avalanche ran to catchment basin at the valley floor at Bird
Flats near MP 98 of the Seward Highway during the night of 12/28 or early
morning 12/29. It was first observed by spotlight early on 12/29. Photos of
the area 3 days prior show sufficient snow for avalanches in the alpine
starting zones at 4000′ despite little to no snow at sea-level and mid
elevations. The avalanche shown was likely triggered by strong winds recorded
at the Penguin Peak weather station located at the top of this path and it
started in one of the 5 basins that make up the 5-Fingers Avalanche Path.
