Route & General Observations

From the Independence Bowl Parking Lot, we skinned up to the slope of the Rae-Wallace terminal moraine at its south end, traveled north along the moraine ridge and then descended via the gully that splits the moraine.

Weather

Air temperature was 21.2 F, calm wind, clear sky.

Snow surface

After the two major wind storms of this past week, there is varying depth of wind broken snow (5-20 cm) depending on location at the surface sitting on top of cohesive windslab. Other areas especially at mid- to upper elevations are wind-stripped.

Snowpack

See SnowPilot graph below. The failures we had with our column and block tests were right at the bottom of the wind slabs where they sit on facet layers.
