Observation: Turnagain

On Sat. March 16, we toured up the Portage Glacier. We ascended the climber’s right hand side of the
icefall between 2000′ and 2500′ at around noon.

Around 7pm while descending our skin track, we discovered that the steep NE face above the track had
naturally released, covering our tracks with 6′ of hard slab debris and bathtub sized chunks of hard snow.
The crown appeared to be about 5-8′. The debris ran several hundred feet out from the base of wall. We
think the face saw some sun in the morning but was in the shade at the time of the release.
