Avalanche: Turnagain
Location: Pete’s North Uptrack
Toured up towards Pete’s North from Johnson Pass trailhead. Low coverage continues to exist in the south end of the pass and so touring up from the power lines involved going through the trees to avoid thick alders in lower elevations. Clear skies and temps in upper 20s.
Avalanche Details
Noticed shorter than ski length soft slabs kicked off while skinning on top of bent alders but we were unable to assess the BSH layer reported in todays report until in more open area where snow depth improved. Most of uptrack involved skinning in dense trees where BSH was not noticed. While party of 3 skinned up toward first open section a large shooting crack was triggered by the leader followed quickly by an avalanche that broke at the skis of the spaced out party of 3 and across the small opening in the alders. No skiers were caught. Skinned up the bed surface to examine the crown and then descended via the skin track.
