Curious about the distribution and reactivity of a potential buried persistent weak layer 20-30cm down at or around the interface between last week’s storm snow and old facet or melt freeze layers, we did a short tour up 4068 and dug on a northeast aspect. Hand shears, pole probing and snow pit tests revealed good structure in this location.
By 1530, we witnessed lots of signs of warming and a corn effect in the top 8-10cm of solar aspects. Some pinwheels off of solars on Marmot were observed on our egress as clouds broke to full sun.
We found some rounded facets 30cm down and got a planar CT. ECTN22 on this layer. NO propagation, good structure in this location.
Nice turns on northerly aspects. Cold overnight temps and relatively mild above freezing temps on northerlies=storm snow hanging in there

Folks certainly took advantage. No skier trigger or natural avalanches observed.
