Avalanche Details

We were skinning up right in the path of the main slide when it broke free. There were no whoomphs or cracks. There were older tracks but we were breaking trail for today. The slide occurred at 11:40 am and there were two of us in the party. On the way in we didn't see any recent natural slides or other obvious signs of instability. It sounded like a distant explosion when it went, then we heard and felt the snowpack below us drop several inches. When I realized what was happening I looked around and saw the small knoll we hid behind and headed for it. While turning around one of my skis popped off and seeing the slide barreling toward us I opted to ditch my other ski instead of try to get the other one back on. When it originally released we were right in what ended up being the main runout path and it was coming quick.
