Observation: Turnagain
Location: North Seattle Ridge
Toured up to N Seattle Ridge and Pyramid Peak. Isothermal snow below 900 feet, then wet dense snow. The Glopness Monster was out and about. Evidence of wind transport in any open areas regardless of elevation. Thick rime above 2800′.
Obvious signs of instability
Observer Comments
Got some very small windloaded W facing test cornices around 2000' to fail with moderate force (compressing knees). They were failing on old, hard wind packed snow.
Weather
Warm and humid. Some light to moderate easterly winds up high at times, but mostly calm. In and out of the clouds all day. Light snow began at 4 pm.
Snow surface
Isothermal up to 900 feet. Wind protected areas between 900 and 2500 ski pen 5 to 10 cm. Wind hammered/rime crust above 2500.
Snowpack
Dug down 1 m on a NNW wind loaded low angle roller around 2000, somewhat protected by small trees. Maritime feel in this area. Right side up, dense snow. 5 cm of 4F- new wind packed snow, everything below this 1 or 2F+. ECTX with 10 overdrive taps. Noticed a few old interfaces, but no distinct gaps in hardness. When filling back in the pit, we "shovel sheared" the back of column and got a Q2 shear 40 cm down, that broke about halfway across the block.
Small test cornices failed with moderate force (compressing knees).
Thick rime
Thick rime crust was ubiqitous on wind effected slopes above 2500.
Creek crevasses.
