Poor visibility today, but saw a few natural avalanches like
this
one in this historic hourglass shaped path on the motorized side
of Turnagain Pass at about mile 64.5 between Bertha Creek and
Johnson Pass. Most natural avalanches occur during storms or
within 24 hours following a storm. This avalanche is not huge,
but was big enough to run from all the way down from the
ridgetop
to the alders near the valley floor. A good reminder to be
careful underneath steep slopes during storms. Natural
avalanches are a big red flag that the snowpack is unstable.
This is the first major avalanche cycle of the 2009-2010
season.
