Route & General Observations

I dug this snowpit at 2400 feet on a SW aspect. The total
snowpack depth at this spot was only 4.5 feet. I got moderate Q2
shears on the facets above the January rain crust (16″ down) and
underneath the freezing rain crust (10″ down). Nothing alarming
except for the recently formed monster surface hoar (up to 3/4″
in size) on top of a breakable melt-freeze/sun crust on S and SW
aspects. This will definately be a future problem once buried.
