Slab broke above skier. Skier was carried and buried waist deep. Was able to self extract with shovel. Ski came off but was recovered. No injuries.
Group of 4 was skiing on lower president’s before going up to the ridge to traverse over to rib 2. Whoompfing and shooting cracks noted throughout day. Plan was to avoid avalanche terrain. Slope that failed was small and would have been a good test slope. Except skier didn’t recognize it as avalanche terrain until was already committed and slab broke above.
Skier was able to self extract. Ski came off in avalanche but was recovered.
