Skied the Northwest facing chutes and ridges of Marmot on Sunday. Wind was benign, temperature was reaching 32 ish. But of special note, when riding on top of the Marmot ridges and ribs, it felt like there were bottomless facets. In each turn, ski penetration was nearly a foot deep which nearly felt like powder, but it was just facets. This condition existed at ridgeline as well, at the top of the skin track, where one walking in boots could punch through the supportable surface into knee or hip deep facets. Perhaps this will be a weakness in a potential loading event on this coming Friday-Saturday 03/29 – 30.
