Toured to the East End of Magnum to ride some NF powder. Surface hoar from car
the car to the summit on Magnun and Sunburst. On the way to Taylor Pass I saw
evidence of a couple of good size wet slides initiated by skiers below the
summit of Sunburst on 3/17. Also saw some fresh sluffs in steep NF couloirs on
Magnum. Didn’t dig a pit but cut several switch backs on the way to Taylor
Pass. Each switchback cut pushed off a 10cm slab which broke loose on buried
surface hoar. These thin slabs didn’t provide much concern on 3/18 Sunday but
might become a problematic sandwich of weak layers with any rapid loading of
new snow.
