Avalanche: Turnagain
Location: Lipps
Close call on the lower slopes of the Lipps ridge on the common up-track. Three skiers caught and carried in a slab avalanche while ascending, all ended up on the surface of the debris after being swept down 300′. Glad to report everyone is OK. The avalanche was triggered from below and propagated above them. It is believed to be a persistent slab that likely failed in the weak faceted snow from pre-Christmas.
These are preliminary details, CNFAIC staff may visit the site tomorrow (wx and hazard dependent) and a final “Near Miss” report will be available as soon as possible. Photos taken from the party involved are below. We would like to thank these skiers for their willingness to share and we are very happy for the positive outcome.
