Observation: Hatcher Pass

Location: Hanging valley east of Gold Mint Trailhead

Route & General Observations

Anchorage Nordic Ski Patrol candidates Matt Hebard, Kelly Kennedy, and Sam Dalton joined patroller Amy Holman on a quick tour out of Gold Mint to practice route finding, backcountry protocols and teamwork.

Breaks of sun yielding to high overcast. Temps in the sun at trail level were 42 degrees F. Temperature at 2700ft was 32 in overcast. Winds were light, downvalley at 2mph

Snow surface

Snow at the trail level was moist but not wet and while it warmed during our tour, still did not have freewater when squeezing snowballs
Around 2700 ft in sheltered northerly aspects the snow surface was drier.
