Route & General Observations

Great snow, cold powder, some sun. Around +50 skiers/riders enjoying the Goldpan/Superbowl area today. On steep south faces, we initiated a couple small localized 10’x10’x6″ wind slabs that did not propagate but did entrain more sluff. Otherwise, skier initiated sluffs also entrained enough snow to potentially unbalance a skier/rider.

Red Flags
Red flags are simple visual clues that are a sign of potential avalanche danger. Please record any sign of red flags below.
Obvious signs of instability
Recent Avalanches?Yes
Collapsing (Whumphing)?No
Cracking (Shooting cracks)?No
Observer Comments

On steep south faces, we initiated a couple small localized 10'x10'x6" wind slabs that did not propagate but did entrain more sluff. Otherwise, skier initiated sluffs also entrained enough snow to potentially unbalance a skier/rider.

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.
Weather

Broken skies. Approx -8c on average. Some winds with lightly blowing snow on exposed ridgetops.

Snow surface

About 10cm new snow, depth varied depending on wind effect. About 15-20cm ski penetration with no crust underneath. Surface snow was low density. Surface snow sluffed and entrained more snow, stopping on the apron. Also, kicked off a couple small 10'x10'x6" localized wind slabs that did not propagate and caused some sluffing.

Snowpack

No surface hoar observed. No formal instability tests. We observed lots of surface snow sluffing on steep south faces, and a couple small localized wind slab avalanches that did not propagate and entrained sluff.
