Higher winds and a shooting crack up to 30 feet long turned us around higher on the ridge. We skied
downslope stopping above steeper convexities. Ski cutting a convexity lower on the hill I popped out a 40 foot wide and up to a foot deep windslab which broke slightly above me and ran several hundred feet entraining some older snow. I skied off the slab onto lower angle snow to skiers left. I misjudged the steepness of the slope in the poor vis and could’ve aimed my ski cut better to clip less of the slab.
FORECASTER COMMENTS:
It is very easy to misjudge the steepness of rollovers. Just as the above observer did, always have an escape route planned when performing any ski/slope cutting.
