Intense snow transport at ridgelines from NW outflow winds
Occasional light to moderate snow transport at treeline from N winds
No collapsing, cracking, or recent avalanche activity from the past few days...
Most recent avalanche appeared to be the one on Butch reported in 2/21 Guinn ob
Few clouds, light winds from the north occasionally gusting moderate above 2000'
Strong sun, temps in the 20s down low... colder up high but the sun made up for it!
A thin breakable rime crust was present from the highway (1400') to our high point at (2800'), slightly thicker up high. It was not present in dense trees, but on all aspects we travelled on. The crust was almost thick enough to be annoying to the ski quality but it really was a friendly, considerate crust in that regard... just loud as you skied through it. A dusting of rimed stellars was on top. Ski penetration of 2-4" throughout the day.
See below for snow structure and pit results in a wind scoured location... height of snow was 110cm, with neighboring areas averaging 150cm.
Snow structure and test results. The buried surface hoar layer 40cm down was more obvious in the pit wall and popped with a lot more energy than what I've observed recently in any of the BSH layers on Turnagain Pass.
The rime crust that was present on the surface of a variety of aspects, and at all elevations along the route.
An abnormally large piece of buried surface hoar in that 40cm down layer mentioned above... generally pieces were in the 4-6mm range.
