Route & General Observations

Toured up Center Ridge to help the NRCS bring up gear to fix the snow depth sensor. While they worked we toured around the ridge and dug two pits and checked the distribution of wind loading on the Library and around the north face of Sunburst.

Avalanche Details

We saw about 4 -5 small dry loose avalanches ranging from D1-D1.5 in size initiating within the gullies and chutes of the library and the North face of Sunburst.

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.
Weather

We had few scattered clouds and good visibility. There was no noticeable wind beyond a slight breeze throughout the day. The sun did not feel like it was warming up the snow surface.

Snow surface

Soft settled windblown snow about 4" at lower elevations and 6" at upper elevations.

Snowpack

Snow depth on the ridge was about 180 cm deep. We dug two snow-pits at 2000', one on a NW aspect and the other on a SE aspect. Neither pit showed any prominent signs of instability (ECTX). The new snow seems to be bonding well with the old snow which is a good sign. There was one slightly harder wind layer in the upper 1' of the snowpack on a SE face, it was about 1" thick and could be something to track.
