Tully LaBelle-Hamer
Center Ridge
2-19-15
11:00-15:00
We toured up Center Ridge sticking to low angle terrain in the valley. We saw the avalanche results
on Tin Can south face referenced in the advisory for 2-20-15. A warm, sunny day yesterday, we did
see some wet roller balls on south aspects. More concerning though was the localized collapsing
and larger whoomphing we witnessed. The higher in the valley we got, the more the collapsing
turned to whoomphing, and it was less local and became larger. The top layer was a pretty thick
crust with melt/freeze, and had small surface hoar on top of the crust higher up the valley. We didn’t
dig any pits.
