This is a cross-section of snow from 2,000 feet on Center Ridge
where the snow collapsed locally. Joe’s finger is pointing to the
top of the rain crust. The snow collapsed on the facets above the
rain crust.
They skied back Center Ridge to the headwaters of Lyon Creek and
heard localized collapsing to 3,000 feet. Above 3,000 feet the
snowpack was about 4 inches of sloughing powder on top of a more
solid base.
