Forecaster Comments

The Chugach National Forest does not recommend leaving or going beyond the established hiking trail at Byron. There is still a lot of snow in the upper elevations and its difficult to see this snow from the trail. Hiking onto the snow piles(avalanche debris piles) is very dangerous right now. Recent activity has been observed this week and natural avalanche activity will continue until the snow has shed for the season.

Avalanche Details

Two natural avalanches occurred approximately 2pm on the 17th. Hikers beware. The side doesn't have much snow and we observed several hikers "exploring" right next to the avalanche site. The right side of the hiking trial prior to getting to the glacier is where the hikers were. They were feet away from where the first avalanche occurred 20 minutes prior.
