Observation: Hatcher Pass

Route & General Observations

From PL just below Hatcher Pass Rd gate, skied up snowmachine route towards Hatcher Pass. Then peeled off, crossed Hatcher Ck and headed up bench on N. side $1000. Topped out in saddle at 4300ft overlooking April Bowl.

Observer Comments

Did observe evidence of D1 sluff, probably skier-tiggered, on the west-facing side of April Bowl. To much shadow to get good pic.

Weather

Cold and clear with calm winds. At 1400 temp -11C.

Snow surface

At PL 25cm loose and wind transported snow with minor development of 1mm surface hoar. Above 3600ft transitioned to mixture of wind slab and loose snow overlying old M/F crust (pic attached).

Snowpack

See attached pit profile. At pit elevation of 4300ft found loose snow overlying a series of aternating layers of wind slab, rounding facets and M/F crust. Got STN and CTN for stabiity tests. Did not do ECT due to nonreaction of snowpack in CT test.
