When: Sunday January 26th, 2025, 11am to 3pm
Where: Glen Alps Trailhead in the Chugach State Park
What to Bring:
- Personal avalanche rescue equipment (beacon, probe, shovel- if you do not have there are free rentals available courtesy of Anchorage Nordic Patrol and Alaska Avalanche School)
- Warm layers and clothes to be outside all day
- Backpack to carry avalanche equipment
- Backcountry mode of travel- backcountry ski set up, split board set up, snow shoes, etc
Join us for a free intro or refresher to avalanche rescue skills. This is a community-oriented rescue-focused workshop for winter backcountry travelers. All experience levels and modes of travel are welcome! If you are new to winter backcountry travel, avalanche rescue equipment will be available to borrow courtesy of the Anchorage Nordic Ski Patrol and Alaska Avalanche School.
Opportunities will include:
- For Beginner Users: An instructor will demonstrate how to use safety equipment to be rescued or help rescue others before you try it for yourself
- For Intermediate/Advanced Users: For those who already have avalanche training, practice your skills with timed rescue scenarios and complicated scenarios like multiple burials
- Practice partner rescue skills: beacon searching, probing, and shoveling
- Make sure your adventure buddies can rescue you!
- Meet local avalanche organizations and professionals
Instructor lead and beginner stations will be a short walk/ski from the parking lot and the more advanced scenarios will be within about a ¼ mile from the parking lot.
