Observation: Hatcher Pass
Location: Two mile creek drainage
Toured from goldmint up two mile creek valley. Skied a 30-35 degree east facing run as well as a west facing couloir. Both were protected by rock from the strong south winds and contained soft snow.
Obvious signs of instability
Observer Comments
Observed a crown on the north facing aspect of 5100 that presumably released naturally during last wind event and appeared to fail at the ground.
Weather
Mid 20s, calm winds in the valley, clear skies. 15-20mph estimated winds on the ridge line.
Snow surface
Variable wind effect was found throughout on our tour up the valley, after reaching above tree line. Good soft snow was found on runs that were protected from the recent strong winds that appeared to be predominantly from the south.
Snowpack
Dug one pit at approx 3500’ on a north facing slope with some wind effect. Total snow depth 180 cm. Pit depth 120cm. Approx 6cm of wind slab on top of 4 finger snow down to about 40 cm, then multiple layers of pencil stiff or greater snow to the base of the pit. Observed collapse without propagation at the 6cm and 40cm interfaces. ECTN18 and ECTN22 respectively. Multiple hand pits throughout the day identified these same layers present on all slopes skied within the valley. Cut and jumped several convexities in the valley without any cracks or slides. Overall the potential exists, but the layers were all very nonreactive today.
