Red Flags
Red flags are simple visual clues that are a sign of potential avalanche danger. Please record any sign of red flags below.
Obvious signs of instability
Recent Avalanches?Yes
Collapsing (Whumphing)?No
Cracking (Shooting cracks)?Yes
Observer Comments

Extremely limited localized cracking on upper elevation leeward aspects at ridgeline in barely cohesive enough snow to resemble a wind slab. No whumphing. Only avalanches triggered were loose dry, slow, low to moderate volume, and tiny, mini barely soft slabs breaking in chunks and then turning into loose dry.

Weather & Snow Characteristics
Please provide details to help us determine the weather and snowpack during the time this observation took place.
Weather

Mostly sunny, 18F, calm winds

Snow surface

precipitation particles approx. 2" from 1/28, over SH in soft snow, over 1 inch of newer snow from 1/24 sitting over near surface facets.

Snowpack

Poor structure, moderate to strong strength, low propagation.

The snowpack consists mostly of faceted snow, with recent newer, DF and PP 2-6"
HS varies greatly from 1 foot in seasonally wind scoured areas to 6 feet in seasonally loaded areas.
Test pits are pointing to less and less potential for propagation.

The generally faceted snowpack was lacking a slab in the mid pack harder than 4F. The lack of stiff snow in the snowpack was making it difficult to achieve propagation results in testing. Average HS experienced today was approx. 1 meter.

Pit1 East, 3600'
ECTN's down 6-12" on new snow/old snow interface and within near surface facets below that.

Pit2 Northeast, 4000':
ECTN 25 on interface of near surface facets below new snow.
