Route & General Observations
Alaska Avalanche School – Rec Level 2 course
Observations from our last field day, three groups in three locations.
No red flags today in the areas where we traveled.
Broken clouds, calm winds, temps in low 20's
New 3-5mm Surface Hoar covered by a trace amount of new snow sitting on fist hard decomposed snow.
Thin and variable snowpack. 30cm average snow height at road level. Increased to 60-80cm near tree line.
Basal Facets are primary layer of concern (~5mm grain size). Secondary concern is the 8-10mm buried Surface Hoar about 20cm down. Several CTMQ1SC on basal facets. Several non propagating ECT's throughout the groups with the exception of one ECTP21 at Basal Facet layer. No propagation on surface hoar due to the lack of slab on top at pit location.
