Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center

The Friends of the Avalanche Center is a 501c3 Nonprofit organization devoted to supporting the CNFAIC. If you think a public avalanche center for backcountry users is important and you would like to help, become a member and support your Avalanche Center. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center (CNFAIC) is a program sponsored by the US Forest Service to provide timely snowpack and weather information to winter backcountry users at Turnagain Pass. Memberships in the Friends run from October 1st to September 30th each year. All contributors of $20 or more will become members automatically. If you use the avalanche forecast and this website please contribute today.

Rob was an outstanding member of the local community, a veteran ski patroller, and professional colleague. He was a dedicated friend of the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center and worked to educate the next generation in avalanche safety. Rob had a sincere passion for the outdoors and skiing. Rob was a strong supporter of the avalanche center, and his contributions will be missed. The avalanche center would like to express our condolences to the Hammel family. We also thank the Hammels for the generous donations sent to the avalanche center in Rob's name. These donations will be dedicated to a memorial scholarship to give educational opportunities to those who cannot afford it.
