Glide Crack
Location:Widow Maker Peak
Date: Feb 23rd, 2010
Photographer:Matt Murphy
Description: Here is a picture of a glide crack right in the middle of Widow
Maker Peak along Seattle Ridge. These crevasse like features in
the snowpack open up all the way to the ground. It is very
difficult to predict when and if glide cracks will avalanche; so,
its best to treat them like cornices and avoid traveling
underneath or anywhere near them. These glide cracks are actively
moving and growing in the snowpack right now 2/24/2010; so, we are
in an active glide crack cycle right now. At least one glide
crack has been observed to avalanche below 2000' on Center Ridge
on the non-motorized side of the highway.
