Cornice Failure
Location:Warm Up Bowl
Date: Feb 23rd, 2010
Photographer:Matt Murphy
Description: The cornices along Seattle Ridge are especially big and fat right
now. This cornice failure happened naturally, but there was a
report of a snowmachine-triggered cornice in Zero Bowl. If you
get to close to the edge of a cornice, it might fail
on you just like it did for a snowmachiner abouve Zero Bowl (No
Name Bowl) on Monday 2/22/2010. He was lucky not to get hurt.
There are lots of stress cracks along the roots and chunks of
debris down in the bowls.

A lot of the hidden stress cracks have been
covered over by a thin wind skin. It can be easy and dangerous to
fall into one of these hidden cracks.
