Warmup Bowl Avalanche Accident

We are deeply saddened to report that a snowmachiner passed away in an avalanche on the backside of Seattle Ridge Saturday, March 22nd. This occurred at Turnagain Pass in Warmup Bowl, also known as -1 Bowl.  Our preliminary report can be found HERE. We will provide a full report as soon as we are able. Become a Member in December!

The avalanche forecast is free to the public—and always will be. But that doesn’t mean it’s free to produce. In fact, forecasts cost about $450 a day to produce. With around 160 forecasts in a typical season, that adds up to more than $70,000 every winter. The Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center is the Forest Service’s non-profit cost-share partner. Big Changes for 2024/25!

As we gear up for the 2024/25 winter season, there are some major changes in store. First off, the addition of the Weekend Avalanche Outlook for Chugach State Park will continue. Look for those to start up near Thanksgiving. Second is really the meat of this year's growth... and that will be for our new forecast zones on the Chugach National Forest- the Summit Lake and Seward/Lost Lake areas. The Chugach NF Avalanche Center is accepting applications for next season's Internship Program! Closing date is June 30, 2024. This program has been highly successful, a staple for the center, and promotes a pipeline for aspiring snow/avalanche professionals.
